		'content' => '<p>The history of the orchestra starts near the end of the Renaissance with Claudio Monteverdi, and, even though the orchestra is now four centuries old, we can say that it is still in a good state of health. Not the revolution of pop music, the rise of jazz, or even the emergence of electronic music in both academic and popular music have stopped it from continually being a reference in the musical landscape. The orchestra, a symbol of Western culture, has expanded its boundaries around the world, receiving influences by different cultures and turning orchestral music into the international language that it is today.</p><p>The orchestra, however, did not have the same characteristics throughout all its history. While ensembles were used in ancient times in all parts of the world it was only towards the end of the Renaissance when composers started to specify what instruments should play which line of the piece. It was not until L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi that an ensemble formed that actually resembles what the modern orchestra looks like today.</p><p>Still, we can see similarities from Monteverdi’s orchestra to today’s use in the concert and media world. We can actually draw a very precise line of evolution in which we can see how the ensemble increased in size and included new families of instruments as instrument construction was perfected and the players’ technique improved. For example, the brass family, for the longest time, only relied on a single – often interchangeable – tube and only broadly adopted valves to change pitches in the middle of the 19th century. The string section, however, has been fully functional since the 16th century with very few improvements applied since.</p>',
