		'content' => '<p>If the strings represented the homogeneity in the orchestra, the woodwind section represents the variety of colors. Made up most commonly by four different instruments –the flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon–, this group portraits what the end of the 17th century and 18th century was about: the melody.</p><p>[img=uploads/topics/woodwind-section-593649f93201f.jpg]<br></p><p><br></p><p>Apart from the experimentations in the initial stages of the orchestra, we can see already from the days of J. B. Lully an orchestra that starts to resemble the current makeup of this ensemble. Back in these days –and especially in this composer–, it would be very common to find a structure of five string sections with a pair of oboes. It would also be usual for composers to add one or two bassoons to complete the woodwind section with its own bass, and have the oboe players –when in need of another color– double on flutes. Later on we can see in composers like J. S. Bach how this section starts having an independent pair of flute players, and –by the end of the 18th century– also a pair of clarinets, providing in this way the base for the growth of the group in the 19th and 20th century.</p><p>But why in pairs? Well, back in the days of Lully and afterward, melodies were often played in 3rds or 6ths by the same type of instrument, so having a pair of oboes would make sense. Then the subsequent additions of other instruments (in pairs) was a &nbsp;natural step.</p><p>Today the woodwind section is not only one of the main sections in the orchestra, but also one of the agilest, most&nbsp;virtuosic&nbsp;and diverse, with exception of the percussion. Although it is true they are not used as often in current film scores, big recording sessions and concert pieces still require a woodwind section made up by 2, 3 or even 4 instruments per family (8, 12, or 16 pieces in the section respectively).</p><p>Concerning the production of sound, even though the four instruments are different, the mechanism is pretty similar. They all have a valve that triggers the primary vibration (the embouchure hole or the reed/s) attached to a resonant chamber (the pipe) that determines the frequency the valve vibrates. In all cases the pipe –which is always open at the far end– has multiple holes that shorten the column of air in order to change the frequency it vibrates.</p><p>However, according to the type of valve they have, they belong to one or other of the following categories:</p><p></p><ul><li>Edge-blown aerophones or flutes: the player uses the embouchure hole to produce the vibration. It encompasses all the flutes.</li></ul><ul><li>Reed aerophones or reeds: the player uses one or two flexible reeds for the same purpose. It includes the oboe and bassoon families (double reed), and the clarinet family (single reed).</li></ul><p></p><p>We can often find instruments from the woodwind section being used for solos, counterpoints, runs, complex textures, or simply doubling other instruments of the orchestra. It is also very common to find one or few woodwinds doubling a string section at unison for almost the sole purpose of adding some body to it.</p>',
