		'content' => '<p>Examples of woodwind instruments performing melodies are found fromt since the beginning of the history of the orchestra. Starting from the Baroque period with operas, cantatas, continuing with the trio section of the minuet of the early Classical symphonies, to symphonic poems and other free form compositions in the 19th and 20th century, all eras have several instruments from the woodwind family featuring solos or doubling on other sections’ melodies.</p><p>Part of the reason for this is, as we have mentioned before, the extremely advanced stage that woodwind instruments were at when they were included in the orchestra. Unlike the brass instruments –and very much like the strings–, all members of this family were fully chromatic and very agile, as they are still today, compared to the brass instruments. But not only that, but most remarkably, even lower instruments of this family, like the bassoon, bass clarinet, or to even some degree the contrabassoon, are very fast compared to the size and register they inhabit. Obviously a piccolo will still be much faster than the bass clarinet or the bassoon, but these last two instruments can also play quick lines in a breeze.</p><p>The other reason for using woodwinds for melodies is that the woodwind section is the biggest resource of different colors that we have in one single family within the entire orchestra. Unlike the strings, and pretty much the brass, all woodwind instruments come from their own different families. The flutes family are make up of the piccolo, concert flute, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute; the oboe family covers the oboe, but also the English horn and the less used bass oboe and oboe d’amore; the clarinet includes the clarinet in Bb, A, piccolo in D or Eb, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, and the less used alto and basset horn; and finally, we have the bassoon family with the bassoon itself and the contrabassoon.</p><p>That being said, they are still one family with similar characteristics, but with their own very different features, and this brings us the opportunity to have the most varied sound set in the orchestra to perform melodies. This is not only in terms of changing colors from one melody to another, but also to change the sound of a melody throughout it.</p><p>Finally, woodwind instruments are excellent at performing intimate melodies, when we only need so much dynamic power they are an incredible resource in term of expressiveness. From warm lines in the bassoon to bright ones in the highest register of the flute, including very intimate performances and expressive vibrato lines, woodwinds are definitely the go to section for more introspective statements, a variety of colors, or virtuosso and agile lines<span style="letter-spacing: 0.1px;">.</span></p>[vzaar=11827011]
