The production company - New Line - was trying to create a new phenomenon following up after their success from the ‘The Lord Of The Rings’.&nbsp; It nonetheless made quite an impact outside of the US.&nbsp;</p><p>An interesting feature of this film is that many characters are being assigned a musical theme.&nbsp;</p><p>Our primary hero Lyra, is a young girl who stands against the leaders of an unjust society. Needless to say that she is not the typical male super strong heroic figure. We therefore will turn towards her champion - Lorek the bear. Lorek was the king of the bear tribe, and got destituted after losing a battle against his challenger for the throne. He got exiled and carried a lot of shame as a result of this defeat. Lyra managed to find Lorek, got him his armor back and made him her companion for the rest of her quest.</p><div>[vzaar=20106992]</div><div><br></div><div><h3><b>The Hero’s Character and What It represents</b></h3><div><br></div><div>Lorek is a very <b>proud </b>character, with high noble values. He embodies a lot of the characteristic of the myth of the ‘<b>Returning King</b>’. He has fallen from glory and is on a journey to redeem his past.</div><div><br></div><div>Another noteworthy feature of Lorek lies in his relationship with Lyra. They’re tied together and he expresses a <b>deep sense of loyalty</b> and <b>affection </b>towards her.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Lorek is a redeemed character who fights to re-establish his stolen Kingdom for the sake of standing up against evil forces of the world.&nbsp;</div></div><div><br></div>',

The traveling effect is accomplished by having several layers playing a continuous stream of triplets.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><u>The bass:</u></div><div><br></div><div>Written in a counterpoint fashion, the bass enhances the travelling effect of the ostinato. It actually adds a sense of <b>galloping</b>. It does a fantastic job at illustrating the stride of the bear on the snow:</div><div><br></div><ul><li>Long accented notes in the low register for the large heavy steps</li><li>Short triplet figures for an agile stride</li><li>Long descending gestures for a gliding effect</li></ul><div><br></div><div>[img=/uploads/topics/3-1-gc-mel-2-5caee8d56e81e.jpg]</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><h3><b>2- A Majestic Melody</b></h3><div><br></div><div>By starting with a <b>double jump</b> of an <b>upward fifth</b>, the composer could interject some element of ‘Supernatural Grandeur’ to the melody. This quickly emphasizes the ninth of the chord.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Another distinctive characteristic of the melody is its <b>large ambitus</b>: two octaves. This is not uncommon but not very frequent either. Overall it feels very <u>large </u>and <u>generous</u>.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Note also how the composer added a simple counterpoint in the second half of the melody. This response occurs right after reaching the highest point of the melody and acts as an <b>affirmation of high achievement</b>. By having the horns playing this line, the composer/orchestrator can convey a sense of <b>nobleness </b>to this countermelody.&nbsp;&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><div>[img=/uploads/topics/3-2-gc-mel-3-5caee8f094f3f.jpg]</div><div>[audio=/uploads/topics/3-2-gc-mel-3-5caee8e0d91b1.mp3]</div><div><br></div></div><div><br></div><div><h3><b>3- A ‘Fantastic’ Harmony</b></h3><h5><b><br></b></h5><div>At a first hearing, one can only notice the <b>E Maj7</b> chord happening at the end of each phrase. It’s quite soft but it sounds <b>intriguing</b>. This chord introduces a <b>chromatism </b>- EMaj7 to Eb Maj - which could come off sharp or abrupt. By using an inversion of the chord the composer managed to soften the progression.</div><div><br></div><div>This chord is also <b>very close to an Ab min</b> - which is a IVmin. We may find some connection with <u>John Williams’ s harmonic language of love</u> as we discussed in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (Romantic module). I would take this element in consideration, because of the special bond between Lyra and Lorek. </div><div>It is also relevant given the fact that this theme is being reused later in a more 'tender' way: &nbsp;after an epic bear combat, Lorek and Lyra hug while the flute replay this theme with a romantic accompaniment.&nbsp; &nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>[audio=/uploads/topics/3-3a-gc-harm-1a-5caee8fca85d1.mp3]</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Finally this chord is similar to our ‘<b>Conspiracy Chord</b>’ - Abm(b6) - which adds a flavour of <b>mystery </b>to this cue.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><div>[img=/uploads/topics/3-3b-gc-harm-1b-5caee907903bb.jpg]</div><div>[audio=/uploads/topics/3-3b-gc-harm-1b-5caee91056836.mp3]<br></div></div></div></div></div><div><br></div>',
