For this anti-villains study case we chose the remake of King Kong, in part because the composer Howard Newton chose to write a new theme for this famous character, overriding the original one written by Max Steiner.</p><p>Released in 2005, this epic monster adventure film held the record of the most expensive movie of all time. It’s the third remake of an iconic American movie from 1933. It was very successful, both financially and critically, and won numerous awards.</p><p>[vzaar=20158623]</p><h6><br></h6><p>Contrary to other Villains themes, <u>we don’t have a lot of dissonances</u>. Newton could have been that both Batman and King Kong are <b>misunderstood </b>and <b>rejected </b>by society.&nbsp;</p><p>Another reason to make the connection with Herman’s music could have been found in the nature of the original world of King Kong - <u>the Skull Island</u>. It’s very reminiscent of the world of J. Verne’s story ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’:&nbsp; same period - turn of 20th century - and the same idea of a hidden world inside our world (in King Kong’s case, the island is surrounded by a thick fog created by the creature heavy breath).&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><h3><b>2- Double Theme</b></h3><h6><b><br></b></h6><p>As in previous examples, we find the different sides of our&nbsp; character is being depicted through different elements and sections.&nbsp;</p><p>1 - The first theme expresses the <b>noble character of King Kong</b> through the use of an upward sixth followed by a&nbsp; descending fifth played in the <u>Horn section</u>.</p><p>2 - The second theme manages to encapsulate a few other sides of King Kong:</p><ul><li>Its&nbsp;<b>mighty power</b>&nbsp;with the use of&nbsp;<u>open fifths</u>&nbsp;- or ‘power chords’&nbsp;</li><li>A&nbsp;<b>dangerous side</b>&nbsp;- he’s a wild beast: the melody is played in the<u>&nbsp;lowest possible register</u>&nbsp;with as many instruments we could find&nbsp;</li><li>A&nbsp;<b>sad&nbsp;</b>and&nbsp;<b>doomed&nbsp;</b>destiny with its melody shape.<u>&nbsp;Two consecutive descending minor thirds&nbsp;</u>contained in a perfect fifth arpeggiate a chord that’s both major and minor.</li><li><b>Mysterious</b>. For this anti-villains study case we chose the remake of King Kong, in part because the composer Howard Newton chose to write a new theme for this famous character, overriding the original one written by Max Steiner.</p><p>Released in 2005, this epic monster adventure film held the record of the most expensive movie of all time. It’s the third remake of an iconic American movie from 1933. It was very successful, both financially and critically, and won numerous awards.</p><p>[vzaar=20158623]</p><h6><br></h6><p>Contrary to other Villains themes, <u>we don’t have a lot of dissonances</u>. Hermann&nbsp;</b></h3><h6>&nbsp;</h6><p>If you hadn’t made the connection yet, go back to Batman’s theme and listen for the similarities (with both <u>Elfman’s&nbsp; ‘Batman’</u> and <u>Hermann’s&nbsp; ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’</u>).&nbsp;</p><p>Four factors:&nbsp;</p><ol><li>The extended arpeggiations of a <b>min(add b6)</b> chord</li><li>The <b>melodic intervals</b> - a minor second - a minor sixth - a perfect fifth</li><li>The <b>melodic resolution</b> with a three notes <b>descending chromatic line</b></li><li>The progression:&nbsp; &nbsp; <b>&nbsp;I min - II Maj&nbsp;&nbsp;</b></li></ol><h6><br></h6><p>[audio=/uploads/topics/14-2-kk-mel-2-5cb6d004c093d.mp3]</p><p>[img=/uploads/topics/14-2-kk-mel-2-5cb6cffa82767.jpg]</p><p>A probable point of inspiration for H. Newton could have been that both Batman and King Kong are <b>misunderstood </b>and <b>rejected </b>by society.&nbsp;</p><p>Another reason to make the connection with Herman’s music could have been found in the nature of the original world of King Kong - <u>the Skull Island</u>. It’s very reminiscent of the world of J. Verne’s story ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’:&nbsp; same period - turn of 20th century - and the same idea of a hidden world inside our world (in King Kong’s case, the island is surrounded by a thick fog created by the creature heavy breath).&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><h3><b>2- Double Theme</b></h3><h6><b><br></b></h6><p>As in previous examples, we find the different sides of our&nbsp; character is being depicted through different elements and sections.&nbsp;</p><p>1 - The first theme expresses the <b>noble character of King Kong</b> through the use of an upward sixth followed by a&nbsp; descending fifth played in the <u>Horn section</u>.</p><p>2 - The second theme manages to encapsulate a few other sides of King Kong:</p><ul><li>Its&nbsp;<b>mighty power</b>&nbsp;with the use of&nbsp;<u>open fifths</u>&nbsp;- or ‘power chords’&nbsp;</li><li>A&nbsp;<b>dangerous side</b>&nbsp;- he’s a wild beast: the melody is played in the<u>&nbsp;lowest possible register</u>&nbsp;with as many instruments we could find&nbsp;</li><li>A&nbsp;<b>sad&nbsp;</b>and&nbsp;<b>doomed&nbsp;</b>destiny with its melody shape.<u>&nbsp;Two consecutive descending minor thirds&nbsp;</u>contained in a perfect fifth arpeggiate a chord that’s both major and minor.</li><li><b>Mysterious</b>.
