That's not to say that the composer should overshadow what's happening with grand romantic gestures and sweeping orchestration - we still need to proceed with a good amount of taste and awareness with regard to balance. But the genre of Emotion-Love allows for a bit more musical nudging, especially if the image on screen is not creating the emotional impact the director or producers hope for in the scene.&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Lato">Love scenes can contain a lot of dialog, and as we said they can cross-over with Slow Drama (like we saw in <i>Far And Away</i>). However, the strongest driving factor in scenes of this nature tends to overwhelmingly be the physical chemistry between the actors and unspoken emotion that may not reveal itself until the penultimate moment. As a result, the music often evolves from small intimate moments into big orchestral statements.</font></p><p><b style="font-size: 30px;"><br></b></p><p><b style="font-size: 30px;">Emotion</b><br></p></h4><h4 style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><p><font face="Lato">Emotions in this type of scene are usually pretty well-defined. They can be sadness, joy, euphoria or some combination, but they tend to run fairly close to the surface and the music is designed to reflect that energy. Hopefully the director has created an authentic and believable performance that will allow a composer to follow the emotional contour and highlight the moments need just a bit more emphasis.&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Lato">The composer needs to be as aware of emotional shifts in this style as much as the Slow Drama. Not all romantic scenes end happily, and some that do may be doomed down the road. It's important for the composer to be aware of the larger story around the characters and to be able to create music that will accompany them on their journey -- not just through the love scene, but through the entirety of the story. As with all styles, balance is important and it can be easy to lapse into cliche.&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Lato"><br></font></p></h4><h4 style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><p><b style="font-size: 30px;">Pacing</b><br></p></h4><h4 style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><p><font face="Lato">The music is usually on the slow side, moving and touching. It may have a hint of sadness or yearning either in the harmonic structure or the melody. Playing to context can be a powerful tool for the composer in these kinds of scenes. For example: what may seem an uplifting lyrical melody on it's own can hold a great deal of sadness and longing when juxtaposed against the proper imagery.&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Lato">Dynamic changes are an excellent method of eliciting emotional responses and a good composer can use the power of a single line presented dynamically to steer the audience's emotions where he needs them to be to be in line with the on-screen performances.</font></p><p><font face="Lato"><br></font></p></h4><h4 style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><p><b style="font-size: 30px;">Intensity</b><br></p></h4><h4 style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><font face="Lato">Emotional pieces rarely start out in full flourish. The impact is felt as the music develops and grows with the action on-screen. Leave yourself room to nurture the piece as the performance and story unfolds. Something intimate and personal, like a melody statement in flute or other woodwinds, or a piano passage that grows organically as the scene moves along, will serve to heighten the emotional sense of the audience and give the piece forward motion and energy.</font></p><p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><font face="Lato">As with Slow Drama, the humanity of the characters is at the core of the story in Emotional pieces. Humans can be strong or frail; noble or cowardly; honest or duplicitous; and all combinations of the aforementioned. 		'content' => '<p>Now that we have studied three different cues, let’s highlight the main elements that make up for a romantic cue:</p><ul><li>A slow tempo played rubato</li><li>A rhythmic accompaniment that follows the emotional intensity of the scene&nbsp;</li><li>A lyrical melody that start with solo Instruments and climax with high strings and doubling in octaves</li><li>Enriched harmonies</li><li>Mostly diatonic progressions</li><li>Possible modulations and change of mode (major to minor)</li></ul><p><br></p><p>The most delicate aspect of a romantic cues lies in the timing and balance: it has to feel right. There’s something <b>magical</b> about falling in love and it’s <b>easy to ruin the moment !</b></p><p><br></p><p>In our examples we saw only examples of&nbsp; &nbsp;<b>‘first kisses’</b>.&nbsp; &nbsp; Not all romantic scenes fall in that category, but those demand extra care and attention. There is a little bit of <b>thrill</b> and a sense of <b>vulnerability </b>that the music needs to convey to the audience.</p><p>Because we’re trying to present a usable frame of reference, we’d like to propose this 3 parts formula to help us map out our romantic scenes:</p><p>1 - <u>Preparation:&nbsp;</u></p><p>At this stage, it becomes clear that there is no other possible topic of conversation. If there is, it’s only a pretext. The music enters softly, but with a definite rhythmic pulse. It’s here to set the tone. It’s appropriate to introduce a theme or two depending on the length of this section. Using a solo instrument is more fitting, it will convey a sense of intimacy.&nbsp;</p><h6><br></h6><p>2-<u> We’re holding our breath:</u></p><p>At this point, something happens that tells us that either the characters will fall in love and kiss, or some sort of drama will ruin the moment. We can spot this because either the characters are getting very close to each other, or one of them moves away, forcing the other to make a move.&nbsp;</p><p>Either way the window of opportunity for the magic moment will be short.&nbsp;<br>This raises the stakes and should bring a sense of thrill.<br>The music will slow down in pacing, even going to a halt, holding a single note or a chord (preferably of a smaller ambitus)</p><h6><br></h6><p>3 - <u>The climax:</u></p><p><span style="letter-spacing: 0.1px;">This is the final stage - the big moment. The characters will hold each other or kiss. Things now accelerate and intensify. The rhythmic accompaniment comes back. The orchestration will quickly become bigger and high strings will carry us through the end.&nbsp;</span></p><p><br></p><p>This formula may seem very cliche but it is nonetheless quite delicate to execute properly. The most difficult transition to handle is between the phase 2 and 3. We shouldn’t be too obvious and a certain sense of surprise has to appear in the music - a new harmony or theme, a modulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>We can only encourage you to dig deeper and find other interesting examples. We hope that this framework will help you appreciate the craft of composers who explore different approaches to romantic/love scenes.</p><div><br></div>',

At two hours and thirty-six minutes long, it was also the longest that he had ever written. His score for The Pink Panther&nbsp; sits at No. 20 on their list of the greatest film scores of all time.</font></font></p><p><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">In addition to countless film and television scores, Mancini released over 90 albums and had 40 hit singles, including the No 1. "Theme From Love Story" and the "Theme From Charlie's Angels." It was the idea that foreground is as important as background. It's rich in style and presentation, full of themes, and unabashedly romantic and emotional in&nbsp;</font><span style="font-family: Lato; letter-spacing: 0.1px; color: inherit;">purpose. Steiner used music to develop the perception of a character. Music being such a profoundly emotional art, it affects individuals in ways that are difficult to explain. Steiner understood this better than most and in this film, he used it to underscore a number of emotional&nbsp;</span><span style="font-family: Lato; letter-spacing: 0.1px; color: inherit;">moments.</span></font></font></p><p><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><span style="font-family: Lato; letter-spacing: 0.1px; color: inherit;">Once again, characteristic in scores of the time period, there is a bit of the melodramatic to today's ears.&nbsp; As with most scenes in the film, the scene is scored wall-to-wall (there are roughly ninety pieces of music in the entire score) with lots of dramatic back and forth that follows the lively exchange between Rhett and Scarlett. Steiner almost seems to be commenting on the sidelines as the drama unfolds and the two characters first banter back and forth, then come together to acknowledge their feelings, and then return to dramatic opposition. There is an almost ridiculous hysteria to Scarlett as it plays against the cool swagger of Rhett while he absorbs her rather unconvincing rejection. The music suddenly surges forward as he kisses her and then just as quickly changes gear as Scarlett pulls away, trying to convince herself that everything Rhett just said about their similarities can't possibly be true. But she knows it is; she also knows that not only does she love him in some way, but that yet again she is being abandoned.</span><br></font></font></p><p><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><span style="font-family: Lato; letter-spacing: 0.1px; color: inherit;">As Rhett leaves and Scarlett faces her isolation once more, Steiner returns with the famous "Tara's Theme." One of the most recognized themes in all film history, it is interestingly not really a love theme, not in the literal sense. As Steiner himself remarked, "Tara is more than a plantation, more than a fine old house saturated with proud and sad and always-loving memories. Tara is a living thing, giving and demanding life."</span><br></font></font></p><p><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><span style="font-family: Lato; letter-spacing: 0.1px; color: inherit;">As themes go, it's a great one and it returns time and again throughout. But what is most fascinating about both the theme and the score is what the composer does within the entire body of the film; how he utilizes the material, scores it, and organizes it. Gone With The Wind was revolutionary art at the time. Themes for four main characters and many of the main supporting characters, it was the quintessential expression of Steiner's use of leitmotif in motion picture music.&nbsp;</span></font></font></p></h4><h4 style=""><p style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><i style="font-family: Lato; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); letter-spacing: 0.1px;"><b><br></b></i></font></font></p><p style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><i style="font-family: Lato; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); letter-spacing: 0.1px;"><b>Breakfast At Tiffany's</b></i></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">The music enters at 2:03 in the scene. Trombones entering and emphasizing Paul's decision to give up on the pursuit of Holly Golightly. Vibes and strings enter indicating Holly's inner conflict. Mancini sets up an interesting rhythmic and harmonic ostinato as Holly reaches her own decision -- to go after Cat, but also Paul.</font></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">Against this repeating figure, Mancini skillfully places the film's theme song Moon River, in altered form both rhythmically and harmonically. There's a restlessness about the melody, almost as if Holly senses that if she doesn't find Cat, she will never be happy; she'll never find herself.&nbsp; Mancini's brilliant evolution of his melody continues as she frantically searches the alley, the unsettled melody and harmonic movement underscoring the fragility of Holly's ideas about her life. The dissolution of the melodic content is complete as she begins to resign herself that Cat&nbsp; - and herself - may be lost for good. Just as Mancini's string lines descend into a darker tone, she sees Paul, possibly for the first time not as threat to her freedom, but as hope.</font></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">The familiar form of the theme reappears when Cat emerges from the crates and Mancini allows the strings and french horns a full refrain before introducing the second lyric in harmonized voices and carrying the song out to the finale. While by today's scoring sound, the arranged harmony in voices may sound dated, it was characteristic of presentations of popular theme songs during the Sixties and Seventies and created a very satisfying - albeit somewhat sentimental - statement of conclusion in cinema.</font></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">There's no doubt that Mancini can craft a melody, and in this case, a versatile one. The song is presented throughout the film in various ways, from the opening titles to full orchestra to the simple memorable rendition of the song with Holly singing while strumming a guitar. Mancini and Johnny Mercer wrote the song for Audrey Hepburn to sing in the film, but the persistence of the melody becomes the primary theme throughout and seems to signify wanderlust, the idea of carefree child-like happiness, and the love of the idea of romance.</font></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">So significant is the connection of the song to the character Holly Golightly, that it's almost impossible to conceive that the song was nearly cut from the film after a test screening. Moon River won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1961, as did Mancini's score.</font></font></font></p></h4><h4 style=""><p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><br></font></font></p></h4><h4 style=""><p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato"><i><b>Pride And Prejudice</b></i></font></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">In some ways, Marianelli chose to score the film with the type of music that Jane Austen would have heard when first writing the stories for which she became so well known. This means a heavy dose of piano and string-centered chamber orchestra, albeit with a modern harmonic sensibility. Enlisting the help of renown pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Marianelli brings hints of Beethoven to the music, ultimately creating a score that is classical in nature, in its most active moments. </font></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">Highlighted by Thibaudet's piano leading the orchestra with energetic passages and blinding flourishes, the theme represents the fierce, unforgiving side of the young Elizabeth Bennet's character, and in this particular cue, the last resistance nature of that character is served with a fantastic, determined performance on piano. Several large swells in the string section accompany the piano, including impressive and full statements of the theme. The music recedes to frame extensive dialog -- this is, after all, Jane Austen -- before crescendoing once more into thematic material.</font></font></font></p><p><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato">Interestingly, Marianelli's music may be intentionally echoing this somewhat less traditional adaptation by the director.&nbsp; Wright purposefully cast an unexpected group of young actors in the lead roles and peppered the secondary roles with established actors. By infusing the story&nbsp;</font><span style="font-family: Lato; letter-spacing: 0.1px; color: inherit;">with some new blood, while maintaining all the necessary authenticity required of the story, he may have inspired Marianelli to do similar with the music. Interpretive passages and lines, reminiscent of the style of Beethoven's Sonatas, are scored here with very contemporary&nbsp;</span><span style="font-family: Lato; letter-spacing: 0.1px; color: inherit;">harmonic rhythms and sensibilities that portray shades of timelessness, but with a definite modern hue.</span></font></font></p><p style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><br></font></font></p></h4><h4 style=""><p style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><br></font></font></p><p style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><font face="Lato" style=""><font face="Lato" style=""><br></font></font></p></h4>',
