Keeping a sounding pitch constant while the harmony around changes is a compositional device known as <b>pedal point</b> (or simply pedal note).</p><p></p><p>While the pedal point is active, the ear naturally “disengages” it from the rest of the elements. Hence, the sustained notes cannot be considered part of the harmony in the traditional way. The accompanying chords work embellishing the pedal point and are traditionally indicated in between parentheses.</p><p>
