This sound combination is quite dark and the <b>bassoon </b>blends very well with the horns, adding a <b>nasality </b>to the tone.&nbsp;</p><p><u>An ‘ear-candy’ / ‘effect’ texture</u>:&nbsp; &nbsp;The <b>instrument </b>for these fast gestures <b>keep changing</b>, going from celesta to Bass Clarinet, piano and finally harp. In most cases they’re ringing - using natural resonance or the pedal - creating a sort of natural reverb effect. It feels quite random and holds lots of <b>dissonances</b>. This texture brings a lot of unpredictable and unpleasant elements that adds to the overall feeling of <b>creepiness</b>.</p><p><u>A low percussion line</u>:&nbsp; &nbsp;Very understated, this texture blends with the low strings. A Bass Drum [B.D.] - or Gran Casa [G.C.] in italian - playing very <b>soft </b>long <b>tremolos </b>creates a <b>continuous thrills</b> in the <b>sub-low register</b>. This genre underwent several phases that revised its approach AND soundtrack, which means <b>there’s a lot of ways to score a Film Noir</b>. It’s a broad genre that encompasses a diverse range of emotions and experiences. The main common trait in the Film Noir genre is its <b>general dark tone</b> - both on the visual level and in the mood.&nbsp;</p><p>For practical matter, we have to <b>distinguish between</b> the general tone of <b>darkness </b>and the actual <b>creepiness </b>depicted in our character/scene.&nbsp;</p><p>What makes something creepy is the <u>uncertainty of a threat</u>. Therefore the <b>ambiguity </b>and <b>unpredictability </b>of whether something is to be <b>feared or not</b> will ‘<u>gives us the creep</u>’.</p><p>Musically speaking we can easily identify the dark elements, such as complex/weird chords, an almost atonal approach and an emphasis on low tones. They all contribute to the ‘Noir’ ambiance of the movie.&nbsp;</p><p>When it comes to the <b>unpredictability </b>factor, let’s point out the <b>slow tempo</b> with <b>no identifiable sense of beat</b>. This helps set up the context for other elements to come in unpredictably - all the not so pleasant ‘ear candy’ elements for example.</p><p>Another surprising element is the <b>melodic resolution on a Db</b>. Up until the arrival of the Db we can almost hang on to the feeling of a G minor phrase, but the final Eb-Db sequence take us somewhere else.
